How to Conduct a Chief Executive Performance Assessment in 10 Steps

One of the board’s most important responsibilities is to assess the chief executive. There are many ways to conduct a CEO assessment, but BoardSource encourages boards and chief executives using BoardSource’s chief executive assessment tool to follow ten key steps:

  1. Compile background material.
  2. Build support for the process and encourage full participation.
  3. Decide who will lead the assessment process.
  4. Provide the board with an overview of the process.
  5. Prepare the Chief Executive’s annual goals.
  6. Distribute the assessment tool.
  7. Tabulate and analyze the assessment results.
  8. Discuss results with the board.
  9. Review the results with the Chief Executive and develop action plans.
  10. Support the Chief Executive’s future development.

There is no single method for conducting a Chief Executive assessment, but boards and Chief Executives are more likely to find the assessment constructive if it is implemented in a thoughtful and planned way. BoardSource encourages boards and chief executives to use the assessment tool.

BoardSource is the recognized leader in not-for-profit board leadership research, leadership, and support. They provide leaders with an extensive range of tools, resources, and research data to increase board effectiveness and strengthen organizational impact, and serve as the national voice for inspired and effective board leadership.
